The Otherkind is available to stream on digital platforms starting September 1, 2026. The release marks the digital debut of a 73-minute arthouse thriller that blends psychological dread with ecological horror. Horror Society announced the availability of the film, which serves as the feature directing debut for Mary C. Russell.
Russell, who previously directed the slasher short Carved in 2015, wrote and directed The Otherkind. The film is described as a slow-burn narrative that leans into parasitic horror and psychological tension rather than gore. It draws inspiration from Irish selkie folklore, applying a modern ecological twist to the myth. Russell cited The Thing and Night Tide as key influences, noting her fascination with mythological sea creatures that assume human form.
The story is set in a sleepy lakeside town where a worn-down police officer investigates a mysterious car crash. Simultaneously, a young woman confronts her sexuality following an unexplainable encounter at the lake. These intertwining plots pull the town into chaos as an otherworldly presence stirs beneath the surface. Production took place on location in Crestline, within the San Bernardino Mountains of California, with multiple scenes filmed at Lake Gregory.
Caroline O’Meara produced the film, marking her first credit in that role. O’Meara is known as a writer and creative director on the series H2O: Just Add Water. O’Meara also appears on screen in a supporting capacity.
The cast includes Rebekah Kennedy, Lestonja Diaz, Marc Anthony Samuel, and Paris Dylan. Supporting roles are filled by Muneeb Rehman, Luciana Faulhaber, and Shylo Molina. Additional cast members include Jeff Pride, Madonna Young-Magee, Laura Dromerick, and Andrew Hansen.
The film has received recognition at several festivals. It won Best Horror/Thriller at Chicago Film Frenzy, the Blood, Sweat & Fears Award at Sin City Horror Fest, and Best Indie Film at LA International Art Film Fest. The digital release allows viewers to access the film following its festival run.
