The Cycle director Jordan Downey recently sat down with iHorror for an interview at Fantastic Fest. The conversation featured stars Deborah Ann Woll and Jeffrey Donovan. They discussed creature horror, Stephen King, grief, science, and finding agency in fear. The film centers on a creature, but the discussion focused on the people standing in front of it.

Downey noted that the creature was a planned element from the start. “That was the thing that I knew would be so difficult,” he said. However, he identified a different challenge that kept him up at night. “Those are the scenes that scare me the most as a director,” Downey explained. “It’s not the monster stuff. ”

The specific scene in question took place in a small room. “It was a small room. It’s all of us there,” Downey recalled. This morgue sequence was the first day on set for Jeffrey Donovan, Will Hochman, and Jeb Berrier. The scene was loaded with scientific exposition. The production team had only one day to shoot it. Downey described the morgue as a different beast compared to the creature work.

While the monster is the visual centerpiece, the human dynamics within a confined space presented a unique hurdle. The cast and crew had to navigate complex dialogue and exposition under tight scheduling constraints. This approach emphasizes the human element over the supernatural threat in the production process.
