Roy Lee, the producer behind Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, is developing a new Silent Hill project. The news emerged from a Wall Street Journal profile of Lee and was reported on Tuesday by Bloody Disgusting, Dread Central, and NME. At this stage, the confirmed details are minimal: Lee is attached, but no studio, writer, or director has been named. It remains unclear whether the project will be a film or a series, though Dread Central refers to it as a film project while Bloody Disgusting and NME note the format is unspecified.

Konami, which owns the Silent Hill intellectual property, does not appear in the current reporting, leaving the specifics of the licensing arrangement unknown. For horror audiences, the primary significance lies in Lee’s track record. He founded Vertigo Entertainment with Doug Davison in 2001 and has spent the last quarter-century adapting foreign and non-film intellectual property into Hollywood releases. His production credits include The Ring and The Grudge, which defined the American J-horror remake boom, as well as It, HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry, The Lego Movie, and A Minecraft Movie. Lee also co-founded the horror label Spooky Pictures with Steven Schneider.

The Journal profile notes that Lee’s involvement in Resident Evil followed a similar pattern. While working with Cregger on Barbarian, Lee asked the director which video game he wanted to adapt and subsequently secured the rights.
