Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil has reached an estimated $196 million worldwide in its second weekend, according to Exhibitor Relations. The figure places the Sony Pictures release within striking distance of the $200 million mark, achieved without any box office contribution from China or Japan.

The film added $27 million internationally across 65 markets this weekend, a 45% drop from its opening. This brings its overseas total to $93 million. The performance follows a $108.3 million global opening, which included a franchise-best $60 million domestic debut.

China is scheduled to open the film on October 5, followed by Japan on October 9. These territories have historically generated significant revenue for the franchise. According to Box Office Mojo, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter earned approximately $159.5 million in China and $36.5 million in Japan. Together, those two countries accounted for nearly $196 million of that film’s $312.2 million worldwide total.

Dread Central notes that while Cregger’s movie will not automatically repeat those specific numbers, the potential upside remains substantial. The current $196 million total was generated entirely outside these two major markets. If audiences in China and Japan mirror the franchise’s historical performance in those regions, the film could see a significant increase in its worldwide gross.

The release marks a strong start for the reboot, with the filmmaker and studio now awaiting the box office results from the final two major territories. No further release dates or distribution details have been announced beyond the October 5 and October 9 openings.
