Peacock released the full trailer for Crystal Lake on Sunday, marking a shift from the restrained marketing of the July teaser.
The trailer outlines the season’s narrative, focusing on Linda Cardellini’s character, Pamela Voorhees. iHorror describes the plot as following “a mother who never got a body back, two strangers turning over her past, and a town that would rather blame the wildlife than look too closely at the woman who cooks at the camp. ” Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane has described the series as a “paranoid ’70s thriller” with “rivers of blood,” noting that it has “all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher. ” Kane told Entertainment Weekly in December that the show draws from the “mistrust-of-institutions era” and the “women’s lib era” of the 1980 original.
Kane praised Cardellini’s performance, stating, “She’s gonna shock and surprise a lot of people. She’s inconceivably brilliant in it. ” HorrorFuel noted that after “more than a decade of agonizing courtroom battles and locked-away IP,” the Friday the 13th universe has finally moved forward with this new production. The outlet described the return to summer camp as a moment to “pack your bug spray” and prepare for “deeply questionable lakeside supervision. ”
Bloody Disgusting contextualized the release by noting that the franchise has historically maintained an “unspoken rule about not looking back too closely on the mythology established by the original film. ” The outlet also discussed the “open-ended (not to mention contradictory) lore” surrounding Jason’s drowning and return. All eight episodes of Crystal Lake are scheduled to land on Peacock on Thursday, October 15.
