The HBO Max series based on The Conjuring franchise now has a showrunner, writer, and executive producer in Nancy Won. This development, reported by Variety and Deadline in September 2025, ends a period of roughly two and a half years during which the project lacked a public creative lead.
The series was originally announced by Warner Bros. Discovery during the presentation that introduced the Max rebrand. The service later reverted to the HBO Max name in 2025. At the time of its initial announcement, the project was described as a drama series that would continue the story established in the feature films. Three and a half years later, that brief description remains the most detailed official plot information available to the public.
Won’s television background is notable for its range beyond strict horror. She previously wrote for Supernatural and Marvel’s Jessica Jones. Her subsequent work includes prestige dramas such as Little Fires Everywhere and Tiny Beautiful Things, as well as the recent Apple series Sunny. The project also has two Marvel writers attached to the team. Despite these personnel updates, the series still has no confirmed cast, release date, or expanded plot details.
The television series exists alongside other franchise developments. The Conjuring: Last Rites concluded the narrative arc for Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s characters, Ed and Lorraine Warren. The franchise has not slowed down since that film, with a prequel currently dated for 2027. The television series remains in development at HBO Max, with the showrunner hire representing the most significant recent update to the project’s status.
