Mike Flanagan is currently writing his adaptation of Stephen King’s The Mist, with the Warner Bros. script due around Halloween. Speaking to Collider at the Toronto International Film Festival, the filmmaker confirmed the project is in active development rather than merely being considered. “I’m writing it right now. I was working on it on the airplane here,” he said.

The project was set up with Warner Bros. in February, marking the first confirmed move from a press release to actual pages. Flanagan emphasized that his version will not be a remake of Frank Darabont’s 2007 film. He stated he has no interest in remaking a movie he admires, noting that the differences between his version and Darabont’s start on the first page. He described the approach as a matter of route, with the way in, the way through, and the way out all being different.

This adaptation follows Flanagan’s 2019 film Doctor Sleep, which was also produced by Warner Bros. and reconciled King’s sequel novel with Kubrick’s The Shining. The new project continues Flanagan’s engagement with King’s work following the recent release of Carrie for Prime Video.

King originally published The Mist in the 1980 anthology Dark Forces and later collected it in Skeleton Crew. The novella ends with the survivors driving south into the white without a resolution. Darabont’s film supplied a different ending that did not come off the page. No further production details, casting announcements, or release dates have been provided beyond the script deadline.
