Courteney Cox has publicly expressed openness to directing the upcoming Scream 8. While attending the Toronto International Film Festival, Cox was asked at the Deadline Studio whether she would consider leading the next sequel. She responded affirmatively, stating that she is ready to move her relationship with the Ghostface character behind the camera.
“Nobody knows more about that movie than I do,” Cox told Deadline. This statement marks a notable shift in the franchise’s leadership dynamics, as Cox has portrayed Gale Weathers since the original 1996 release. Her three decades of experience within the series provide a unique perspective for potential future leadership roles.
The timing of this comment coincides with the fact that Scream 8 currently lacks an announced director. The franchise has seen significant changes in its directorial team over the years. Wes Craven directed the original film and the first three sequels through 2011’s Scream 4. Following an eleven-year gap, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett revived the series with the 2022 Scream and Scream VI. The duo has since moved on to other projects, including Abigail and The Mummy.
Kevin Williamson, the original screenwriter who also directed Scream 7, has previously stated he will not return to direct the eighth film. Williamson wrote the first, second, and fourth entries in the series. With Williamson stepping away from the director’s chair for the next installment, the search for a new leader continues. Cox’s willingness to step into this role adds a new dimension to the production discussions for the franchise’s next chapter.
The announcement was made during a public appearance at the Deadline Studio at TIFF2026. No official confirmation of Cox’s hiring has been released by the studio. The development remains a statement of interest rather than a finalized production decision.
